Image Competition Scoring
MOPPA Image Competition is conducted through our State Affiliate, MOPPA, and is based on the 12 Elements of a Merit Image established by the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). These elements provide a nationally recognized framework for evaluating photographic excellence, craftsmanship, and impact.
While PPA merits are not awarded through this competition, MOPPA offers its own awards, exclusively for Missouri members of the Missouri Professional Photographers Association. The Image Chair(s) and judges reserve the right to question or reassign the category of any entry. Images that do not fit the designated category or fail to follow category rules may be reassigned at their discretion.

Entry Costs:
Members: $15 per image
Non-Members: $20 per image
Know the rules. Read the competition guidelines carefully, note all deadlines, and make sure you understand the categories, merits, and trophies.
Learn the 12 Elements. Study the 12 Elements of a Merit Image and think about how to apply them to your own work to strengthen your entries.
Familiarize yourself with judging. Subscribe to PrintCompetition.com to watch competitions from other associations, review submitted images, and get comfortable with the judging process.
Prepare your images. Title your images thoughtfully, and don’t hesitate to seek mentorship and feedback. MOPPA offers a supportive Facebook community for image competition—join us here to connect with fellow photographers, share ideas, and get helpful tips.
Submit your entries. Enter your final images at PrintCompetition.com before the deadline.

Competition Categories
People Portrait
Capture the personality, expression, and connection of your human subjects! From newborns to high school seniors, solo portraits to large family groups, this category celebrates the magic of people in all forms.
This category includes:
Children/Newborn: This sub-category must contain a child or children from birth to age 15.
Senior: This sub-category portrays a male or female aged 16 to 19.
Family/Group: Consists of portrait images of groups and/or families.
Adult (Individual): Portrait images of an adult person.

Reportage
An image that captures a moment in time and tells a story. Only single-capture images will be accepted. ONLY basic color and brightness adjustments, cropping, and dodging/burning editing is allowed with the exception for straight-out-of-camera. Composite and multiple-exposure images will not be accepted. The originally captured image (in RAW/DNG or JPEG) must be available if the committee requests.
This category includes:
Reportage: Images that illustrate an actual public or non-public event, life, an area of human interest, telling news that have meaning in the context or record of events, high impact, and/or lasting emotional response.
Sports: Images that illustrate sporting events.
Straight-Out-of-Camera: No adjustments, RAW format only.
Judges’ Authority
The MOPPA Image Competition Committee and judges reserve the right to recategorize any entry they believe has been submitted in the wrong category. This ensures fair and accurate judging, so every image is evaluated where it truly belongs.
General Notes for All Categories
Merit and trophy eligibility is based on scoring 80+ points.
Images earning 80+ points qualify for merit recognition.
Those that meet this threshold may be eligible for additional award honors or trophies.
Entrants must read and comply with all competition rules.

Merits & Scoring Standards
To align with PPA‑style scoring, images are evaluated on the 12 Elements of a Merit Image (impact, technical excellence, creativity, composition, etc.).
100–95 — Exceptional
94–90 — Superior
89–85 — Excellent
84–80 — Deserving of a Merit
79–75 — Above Average
74 & below — Below Exhibition Standard

Animal Portrait
Furry, feathered, or wild — this is where animals shine! Capture pets, domestic animals, or wildlife, either in controlled environments (studios or owner-managed settings) or in the wild. Show personality, character, and charm.
This category includes:
Animal – Controlled settings
Wildlife – Uncontrolled or natural environments

Wedding
The entrant must have captured and created the original exposure or exposures during the time constraints of the wedding. Images should include some kind of visual wedding reference(s). (Non-wedding day photos can go in portrait or illustrative, etc.)
This category includes:
Wedding: Images can portray a subject or subjects from all aspects of a wedding, including traditional portraits, candid, or detail work.

Illustrative
Consists of commercial/industrial images, scenic, and similar subject matter. Capturing the beauty of nature, wildlife, industry, and architectural areas is considered illustrative.
This category includes:
Scenic Landscape: This sub-category shares joy and adventures while expressing a sense of place.
Still Life: Still Life (flowers, products, objects, etc.) should be the main subject.
Cityscape: Images in this category are architecture, an interior or exterior of a structure, or within an industrial environment.
Commercial: Images created for a commercial client to advertise a product and/or promote a brand or company.

Artist
With composite entries, the artist is allowed to use any media to create their vision. The vision and final piece should be the artists vision and should NOT represent a piece or vision created from another artist. The art piece needs to be unique. Art can include the following media: drawings, painted art, photography, stock images, AI/CGI, and must be displayed as thumbnails. Stock images must have proper licensing.
This category includes:
Artist Open: Entries will be judged for their digital, artistic, and technical proficiency.
Artist Restoration: Entries will be judged for the digital, artistic, and technical proficiency of a restored image.

Awards & Recognition
MOPPA awards celebrate excellence in image-making and are reserved for MOPPA members, with the exception of the Non-Member Award. Winners will be honored during MOPPA’s Annual FotoChaos Conference Award Banquet, where trophies, ribbons, and certificates are presented in celebration of outstanding work. Following the banquet, all winning images will be released within 2 weeks on PrintCompetition.

Master Criteria
Entrants who are members of MOPPA and holding a PPA Master's Degree are eligible for Master Awards. Check and update your profile in PrintCompetition.com.
Non-Master Criteria
Entrants who are members of MOPPA and who do not hold or designate a PPA Master degree, per the entrant’s profile in PrintCompetition.com

Each judge selects their favorite image from a MOPPA member, regardless of the image score.

The top scoring image for the main category.
1st place is a trophy, 2nd place receives a red ribbon, and 3rd place receives a white ribbon. As well digital badge for each category for social media.

MOPPA Image Competition – Rules & Entry Guidelines
Entry Platform & Fees
All entries must be submitted through printcompetition.com.
A basic subscription to printcompetition.com is required to enter.
Each entrant may submit up to 10 digital images.
Entry fees are due at the time of upload. All fees are non-refundable.
Who May Enter
The competition is open to all photographers.
Only MOPPA members are eligible to earn merits and trophies.
Non-members are eligible to win a one-year MOPPA membership if they receive the highest score among non-members.
Image Creation & Authorship Requirements
Entrants must have personally captured and created the original exposure(s) using photographic processes.
All processing, manipulation, and rendering must be completed by the entrant or under their direct supervision.
All visual elements must be created by the entrant unless explicitly allowed within a specific category.
Stock imagery and AI-generated content are prohibited unless specifically allowed within a category. When permitted, guide images are required.
Entrant identifiers (name, logo, watermark) may not appear anywhere in or on the image.
Images created during workshops, under instructor supervision, or that are not fully self-directed are ineligible.
Multiple entries of the same subject are permitted only if each image represents a clearly different concept.
Images previously awarded MOPPA merits may not be re-entered in a future competition.
Images previously entered into a PPA competition are eligible.
Releases & Legal Responsibility
Entrants must obtain and retain access to all required releases (model, property, contractual, etc.) when applicable.
By submitting an entry, entrants agree to hold MOPPA harmless from any claims or liabilities arising from the use of submitted images.
Third-Party Content & Software
Third-party imagery, AI elements, and/or stock images are only allowed in designated categories and must be disclosed using guide images.
Third-party actions or presets that enhance image characteristics—without adding visual elements—are permitted unless otherwise restricted by category rules.
File Specifications & Naming
Longest image dimension: 4000 pixels.
Embedded color profile: sRGB or Adobe RGB (1998).
File format: JPEG, quality setting 10.
File names: Only the title of the entry; no underscores or special characters.

Artificial Intelligence Guidelines
Photographic Open Competition
AI Editing Allowed:
Removal of objects (blemishes, stray hairs, light stands, birds, etc.)
Editing and enhancement tools (sharpening, healing tools, red-eye correction, dodge & burn, etc.)
Matching/correcting color, lighting, contrast
Image upscaling
AI Editing Not Allowed:
Adding elements with or without a text prompt
Generative Fill that adds new content (new elements, expanded backgrounds, clothing changes, etc.)
Replacing backgrounds with new images
Content-aware scaling that adds new visual information
Note: Content-aware tools used strictly for fill/cleanup (not adding info) are permitted.
Artistic Open Competition
All forms of AI editing are permitted.
Any AI-created or altered elements must be disclosed.
Guide images must be included to show AI-created elements (e.g., skies, landscapes, objects).
Awards, Recognition & Distribution
Only MOPPA members are eligible to receive awards (except the Non-Member Award).
Trophies, ribbons, and/or certificates will not be mailed by MOPPA due to shipping costs; winners may cover mailing costs if desired.
Awards not claimed within three months will be respectfully discarded.
Awards are formally presented during MOPPA’s Annual Conference Award Banquet.
All winning images will be released in PrintCompetition within 3 weeks after the Award Banquet.
Disqualification & Final Authority
Failure to comply with these rules may result in disqualification.
Any entry that violates copyright, trademark, or other applicable laws will be disqualified.
All decisions by the MOPPA Image Competition Committee are final.
Category Rules
Judges’ Authority

1. People Portrait Category
Subcategories: General Portrait, Children (birth–15), High School Seniors (16–19)
Rules:
Images may depict individuals of any age or groups of people.
All processing, manipulation, or enhancements must be completed by the entrant.
Entrant identifiers may not appear on the face of the image.
Images created under direct supervision are ineligible.
Duplicate subject entries must represent entirely different concepts.
Images must adhere to ethical standards, including model releases when applicable.
2. Animal Portrait Category
Subcategories: Animal (controlled settings), Wildlife (natural environments)
Rules:
Capture animals in controlled or natural environments (pets, domestic, wildlife).
All processing and manipulation must be completed by the entrant.
Entrant identifiers may not appear on the face of the image.
Images created under supervision are ineligible.
Duplicate subject entries must represent entirely different concepts.
3. Reportage Category
Subcategories: Reportage / Photojournalism, Sports
Rules:
Capture life, events, or meaningful moments. Timing, storytelling, and emotion are key.
All processing and manipulation must be completed by the entrant.
Entrant identifiers may not appear on the face of the image.
Images created under supervision are ineligible.
Duplicate subject entries must represent entirely different concepts.
4. Wedding Category
Subcategories: Day of Wedding
Rules:
Images must portray all aspects of a wedding, including portraits, candids, and details. Wedding-themed images outside the event timeframe belong in People Portrait or Illustrative categories.
Entrants must capture original exposures themselves.
All processing, manipulation, or rendering must be completed by the entrant.
Entrant identifiers may not appear on the face of the image.
Images created under supervision are ineligible.
Images derived from another person’s work are prohibited unless written consent is obtained.
Duplicate subject entries must represent entirely different concepts.
5. Illustrative Category
Subcategories: Illustrative / Commercial, Landscape / Nature, Illustrative / General
Rules:
Open to creative, commercial, or landscape photography.
Images may be staged or conceptual; all processing must be completed by the entrant.
Entrant identifiers may not appear on the face of the image.
Images created under supervision are ineligible.
Duplicate subject entries must represent entirely different concepts.
6. Artist Category
Subcategories: Artist Open, Restoration
Rules:
Entries may be created in various artistic mediums; photographs are allowed but not required. Freehand drawing, painting, or digital art is allowed. Stock images may only be used with written consent.
All processing, manipulation, artwork, or rendering must be completed by the entrant.
Entrant identifiers may not appear on the face of the image.
Images created under supervision are ineligible.
Duplicate subject entries must represent entirely different concepts.
For restorations, include guide images showing the restoration process.
7. SOOC / RAW Category
Rules:
Images must be captured in-camera without post-processing; only RAW files may be submitted.
Images must be captured by the entrant alone.
No supervised or class-assignment images allowed.
Entrant identifiers may not appear on the face of the image.
Entries violating copyright, trademark, or law will be disqualified.
RAW entries created using cell phones or drones are not allowed.
Only native camera RAW file formats are accepted; second-generation files (jpg, psd, etc.) are ineligible.
In-camera presets may be applied. No additional presentation files allowed.
Duplicate subject entries must represent entirely different concepts.
General Notes for All Categories
Judges may recategorize entries to ensure fair evaluation.
